Kindergarten Ideas

Kindergarten is that great transition time into "real school" for most kids and for homeschoolers it can be one of the most fun seasons as you watch your little ones really start to grasp concepts and understand what they're learning while still having fun!  Here are some great ideas for making the most of the Kindergarten school year.

Math Games

Here's a great list of math games for the kindergarten age.  The nice things about these games is that they're fun for the whole family too!

Uno is a great game and pretty easy for young kids to learn.  The motivation of the winning game will get  kids recognizing actual numbers quickly!
Connect Four is a fun "tic-tac-toe" kind of game which is a great visual counting game - perfect for this age group. It also helps with developing their minds toward strategy and advanced planning as they think through where the next piece should go.  Kids love this game!  Expecially when they can dump out the disks and start over!
Rummikub is a fun game for the whole family. Young children will probably ned to work in teams with an older sibling or adult but this is a great game for number and pattern recognition.

Sequence for Kids
We didn't have this game for our kids so I can't give my personal recommendation but it looks like a great game for memory and sequencing - two very important skills for math mastery.

Classic Wooden Abacus
Every child from preschool age or up should own a basic abacus to assist them in learning place value. Absolutely the best way to help a child concretely begin to understand the whole concept of ones, tens, hundreds, etc. Plus the kids love to mess with the beads so it makes learning very fun! Here's a
great blog post from another homeschooler that talks about the fun use of an abacus.

I'll list some more games and fun ideas for kindergarten and beyond in the coming weeks!  Enjoy and start playing to learn!
